Did Santa miss the memo on your wishlist for snowshoes? No worries! Take matters into your own hands and get yourself the perfect pair of snowshoes. Whether you're a seasoned snowshoer or a newbie looking to hit the winter trails for the first time, here's your guide to choosing the right snowshoes in 2024.
Snowshoes come in various types, each designed for specific purposes. Determine your primary use before making a choice.
• Recreational: Ideal for semi-packed snow, these are rugged enough for moderate terrain and light enough for a natural stride. Perfect for most individuals.
• Backcountry: If you're venturing off-trail into deeper snow, opt for backcountry snowshoes. These cover a larger surface area and boast technical features for more challenging conditions.
• Running: For those with a need for speed on the snow, running snowshoes are lightweight and designed for a natural running stride.
Selecting the right size is crucial for staying on top of the snow. Follow the manufacturer's recommended weight range for each model. If that information is unavailable, consider this general reference chart:
Under 70 lbs: Kids size
70 - 155 lbs: 8x21
90 - 170 lbs: 8x25
170 - 220 lbs: 9x30
Over 220 lbs: 10x36
Remember to factor in the weight of your backpack and gear.
Opt for snowshoes with adjustable straps compatible with your preferred footwear. Choose between pivoting and fixed bindings based on your preferences. Pivoting bindings allow for a natural gait, while fixed bindings offer stability when navigating obstacle
Consider the features based on the snow conditions you anticipate. Aluminum frames are excellent for beginners, providing durability without excessive weight. Renting snowshoes for a trial run can help you identify your preferred features.
• Aluminum Frames: Ideal for beginners.
• Rent First: Try different snowshoes to discover your style.
• Quick-Release Buckles: Look for convenience in fastening , like quick-release buckles and ratchet-style straps.
Poles: While some swear by poles, it's a personal preference. They provide stability but may hinder certain activities. Consider your snowshoeing style before investing. (Some snowshoes come with poles!)
Leg Gaiters: Waterproof leg gaiters can be more valuable than poles in certain terrains. Prioritize them for a comfortable snowshoeing experience.
Whether you shop locally or online, most retailers allow returns or exchanges.
