What do you get when you combine the magical world of Harry Potter and artificial intelligence? For English Professor Carmen Bucher, computer science Professor George Gabb, and Associate Director of Learning Resources, Stephanie Garcia, at Miami Dade College’s North Campus, the answer is an ingenious faculty project selected for the President’s Innovation Fund. In the project “Harry Potter and the Secret Power of AI,” the trio links literature and AI to promote both literary and digital literacy. The idea is for students to build AI models that can identify patterns of literary devices used in the Harry Potter books, such as allegory, irony, metaphor, symbolism, and foreshadowing. Bucher said they hope the students not only learn to recognize literary devices and see AI as a tool to solve problems, but also how to work collaboratively in settings involving different disciplines.

Launched in 2022, the President’s Innovation Fund is a competitive grant program that empowers full-time faculty to experiment, innovate, and develop evidence-based learning models that improve student learning. Awarding ten awards of $10,000 each, the program aims to support faculty professional growth and encourage the development of learning models that can be shared with other faculty and courses at Miami Dade College and beyond.
