Archival Outlook - March/April 2020

Come to Chicago and Create Our Future!

Jillian Cuellar, Jennifer Meehan, and Tom Ruller 2020-03-05 15:42:36

The 2020 Joint Annual Meeting of SAA and the Council of State Archivists promises to be one of the most diverse, challenging, and educational conferences yet. With an abundance of excellent educational sessions that will inform, inspire, and impact archivists from all backgrounds, the ARCHIVES✻RECORDS 2020 program is one that we hope will resonate with everyone and provide opportunities for all to engage critically and creatively with the current issues facing our profession.

Across a wide array of sessions, the ARCHIVES✻RECORDS 2020 program provides different pathways for imagining our future, reflecting the diversity of our profession and society as a whole, bringing together voices of experience and practice with those who are historically marginalized, and highlighting perspectives that are new, engaging, and energizing.

The 2020 Program Committee has organized tracks of educational sessions designed to help you create new and transformative approaches to outreach, responsibly steward and provide access to archives, develop and lead staff, and address the challenges of government records. A continuum of educational sessions will lead us from broad theoretical concepts to practical implementation with the goal of transforming the work we do. In Chicago, you will:

  • Learn about new approaches to description that improve and advance access to collections through terms and language that is culturally respectful and accessible,

  • Discover new technological approaches to address the challenges of born digital records,

  • Hear about approaches to engaging communities to ensure their inclusion in the documentary record,

  • Learn about the role of artificial intelligence in processing large collections of electronic mail,

  • Build your skills in working with archivists and patrons who are physically challenged,

  • Understand ethical approaches to collecting and providing access to private and culturally sensitive materials, and

  • Be challenged to envision the future of our profession and the documentary record that we steward.

Whether you’re a seasoned professional, new professional, or mid-career archivist who wants to evolve your skills to build an archival collection that can prosper and provide value, you will find something in the ARCHIVES✻RECORDS 2020 program that engages, excites, and educates.

The 2020 Joint Annual Meeting is an opportunity to learn, imagine, and create our future together. You’ll leave with new perspectives, knowledge, and tools that will help you to create the future now. Come to Chicago and join us!
