MDC ignites passion and diversity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
In the past academic year, MDC received more than $25 million in STEM grants, including $14.5 million from the U.S. Department of Education, to enhance the success of minority students in STEM fields. Alumnus Lemay Gonzalez, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences, is grateful to the School of Science for the opportunity to perform 280 hours of research as an undergraduate. “This opportunity has enriched my application as a candidate for pharmacy school, and has caught the attention of universities ranked in the top five in the nation.”

MDC was certified with the Seal of Excelencia, the nation’s premier authority on efforts to accelerate Latino student success in higher education. The college was only one of 10 institutions nationwide to earn the certification in 2021. The 2021 cohort joins a prestigious group of only 14 other seal-certified institutions.

Nursing students at Miami Dade College’s Homestead Campus now can hone their skills at the new Benjamín León School of Nursing Simulation and Skills Center. The 4,850-squarefoot facility offers students advanced simulation technology similar to that already available at the Medical Campus’ state-of-the-art Center for Learning, Innovation and Simulation. Both sites contribute to making MDC the local leader in health care training.
Nursing Dean Dr. Tommie Norris said the new center in Homestead provides a supportive environment in which students can master clinical and critical thinking skills by practicing on automated, life-like manikins. “Once the skill is mastered in the laboratory setting, students can perform the skills in the clinical setting under the supervision of the nursing faculty,” she said. The Simulation Center will also be used for interdisciplinary efforts with the county’s health care community and other MDC health-related programs.
