My artistic inspiration finds its roots in the Group of Seven artists, Tom Thompson in particular, for his use of colour and brush strokes to depict the Canadian landscape. In my images, I add subjective interpretations to photographic reality that creates visually interesting compositions that appeal to the viewer at different scales of observation. I am also compelled to create images that stir the emotions of exploration, desolation, awe and wonder. Frequently, I will exclude the sky from my landscapes or focus on a single element. I enjoy the abstraction of selective framing to expose the viewer to new details – often less is more and the lack of a frame of reference provides the viewer with freedom to interpret and explore my photographs.
