2023-07-08 10:30:39

Miami Dade College’s School of Education has partnered with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to launch a new Teacher Candidate Residency program, aimed to quickly fill critical teacher vacancies in the area. This program offers paid internships to students pursuing a degree in education, providing them with valuable classroom experience and mentoring from seasoned teachers. As a result, 34 MDC students have already been offered full-time employment with the school district after graduation.

Jennifer Madriz, an MDC student and inaugural member of the program, is now fulfilling her dream of becoming a first-grade teacher at Kensington Park Elementary even before completing her bachelor’s degree. With approximately 90% of the county’s teachers being MDC graduates, this innovative residency program helps address teacher shortages and supports the education system in Miami-Dade County.
