The American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) sponsors a Cardiac and Pulmonary Program Certification process. It is the only peer-reviewed accreditation process designed to review individual facilities for adherence to standards and guidelines developed and published by the AACVPR and other professional societies. All four of our Cardiac Rehab locations are individually certified, with re-certifications required every three years. The American Heart Association and the AACVPR are both excellent resources for those seeking more information about Cardiac Rehab, however it is important for patients to have a support system around them to help ensure success. CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System offers PACE (Pulmonary and Cardiac Education), a social support system that is enhanced through educational presentations. “Any Cardiac or Pulmonary event can have a tremendous impact on an individual and their family, both physically and emotionally,” said Moseley. “Not everyone has a great family or friend support system, and the Cardiac and Pulmonary staff fills that gap. The staff helps the patient gain confidence in their abilities, and patients with pulmonary and cardiac disease that have positive support have less depression and anxiety.” Overall, Cardiac Rehab allows patients to see that they are not alone, that there are other people that are going through similar cardiac or pulmonary problems, and outlets like PACE give the person participating a way to share their personal experiences and observe other patients’ methods of coping through the disease process. There is strong statistical evidence of the benefits of participating in early, outpatient cardiac rehab, including: • Reduced all-cause mortality ranging from 12%-24% • Reduced cardiac mortality from 26%-31% • Reduced readmission rates to hospital • A strong dose-response relationship between number of CR sessions and long-term outcomes • Improved adherence to preventive medications • Improved function and exercise capacity • Improved mood and quality of life • Improved modifiable risk factors The future of cardiac rehabilitation – at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System, in East Texas and across the country – is very bright. “We have truly placed Cardiac Rehab in locations where growth can be accommodated, as the number of lives we are able to impact grows. Cardiac Rehab means reduced readmission rates to hospital, improved adherence to preventive medications, and is art of a real continuum of the care of the patient from the hospital to the services the patient receives after they return home. It is part of our Mission to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ,” said Moseley. SPECIAL SECTION SPONSORED BY DECEMBER 2017 / JANUARY 2018 147
