Jason Rivera didn’t think he’d be animating professionally just weeks after completing his studies at Miami Dade College’s Miami Animation & Gaming International Complex. However, he and three other students (Ivan Delgado, Sofia Raffo and Kristen Molina) from MAGIC’s first graduating class all received internships at Univision Digital over the summer as part of a partnership between Univision Communications Inc. and MDC. “We learned so much about the speed and efficiency it takes to work there,” Rivera said. Delgado agreed, “It was interesting to see how the newsroom works. It was extremely fast-paced.” Rivera and Delgado worked together at Univision on an animated guide to viewing the eclipse event, which occurred this past Aug. 21, 2017. This video was unique because it used photo manipulation instead of 3-D characters. “MAGIC helped a lot in the eclipse project,” Rivera said. “They taught us how to use industry- standard programs like After Effects, Illustrator and Premier, which are necessary to composite and create these types of videos.” Now that MAGIC has a new class, Delgado and Raffo shared their experience at the Venture Cafe kickoff of the 2017 MIA Animation Conference & Festival. “We walked through the production of short films from hiring voice actors and getting our team assembled to creating backgrounds and writing a script,” Raffo said. “It’s all about coming up with a story and making those characters come to life.” – BC
