The importance of the humanities – the study of the human experience – to a democratic society cannot be overstated. And, in an increasingly technology-driven world, studies in the humanities are more important than ever. In support of humanities students completing their degrees at Miami Dade College before transferring to Florida International University (FIU), the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded MDC and FIU a three-year, $2.5 million grant. The “Making Diversity Meaningful in the Humanities: an MDCFIU Pathway Partnership” grant will support programs to assist 5,000 students annually. Fostering even more collaboration between MDC and FIU, this partnership will provide FIU advising staff on all MDC campuses and two residential summer bridge programs at FIU to expose students to intensive humanities research and writing. Opportunities for paid research fellowships with MDC and FIU faculty as well as internships will also be available.
