MDC ’s entrepreneurial students and alumni now have even more ways to earn cash to launch or expand their businesses. The Idea Center at MDC, Wolfson Campus is searching for imaginative entrepreneurs and innovators for its new Innovation Prize competition. Funded by the Veronica and Gaston Taratuta Foundation, the winners will share $50,000 in prize money with a potential for up to $250,000 in follow-on investment. The winning businesses must demonstrate a fresh idea to solve critical problems in the community. The competition is open to all MDC students as well as alumni who have graduated within the last five years. Applicants must also show that their businesses – which may fall under categories such as health care, climate change, public transportation and housing – are repeatable, scalable and have potential for growth and sustainability. Four prizes will be awarded in two categories: startups and existing businesses. The existing businesses will compete for a first-place prize of $25,000 and a runner up of $15,000, while two $5,000 awards will be available for promising startups. Winners will also receive a complimentary branding session with an industry expert, free enrollment into any Idea Center workshop or program in 2018 and will be featured in The Idea Center newsletter and Refresh Miami blog.
