MDC Offers Certificate Program in High-Demand Field In response to a growing industry demand for emergency responders, Miami Dade College is giving students an opportunity to fast-track their careers in the fire science industry with a new Fire Fighter/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate. This program leads to an industry certification, allowing students to earn credits toward MDC’s existing Fire Science associate degree and the EMT College Credit Certificate upon completion. The program, a collaboration between MDC’s School of Justice at North Campus and MDC, Medical Campus, enables students to diversify their skills without having to incur the costs associated with earning a second certification. “While these programs aren’t new to the College, they were previously offered separately,” said Dr. Raimundo Socorro, the dean of MDC’s School of Justice. “This created a financial challenge for many students.” By combining the two tracks, the program now consists of 750 hours of coursework, which makes students eligible to apply for financial aid. But that isn’t the only benefit. Socorro said cohorts are kept small – generally capped at 45 students – to ensure a safe and productive student- teacher ratio. “The new program meets all the same standard requirements for firefighter academy with an additional EMT specialty,” Socorro said. “This gives students an opportunity to earn multiple credentials by the time they graduate and begin applying for jobs.” – AVG
