First in the World Grant Helps Students Succeed How can examining the factors for expanding a Latin food franchise help a student simplify a complicated math equation? A new version of MDC’s Intermediate Algebra course (MAT1033) can answer that. It isn’t enough to pass College Gateway Mathematics; a student must build competence and confidence for success in math-related careers – the jobs of the future. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education First in the World Program, MDC’s Contextualized and Co-Requisite Algebra Track (CCAT) Mathematics Grant aims to increase completion of mathematics courses that are a major barrier to students’ progression. The grant has allowed MDC mathematics and business faculty to develop a new MAT1033 for Business Majors curriculum, which is piloting at MDC, Kendall Campus this academic year. The new and improved course combines intermediate algebra content that is put into context or real-life business scenarios with instruction that promotes active learning in the classroom. There are also advising and mentoring services to build the students’ motivation and persistence. “We are providing a holistic approach to increase students’ sense of belonging, confidence, perseverance, completion and progression,” said Dr. Zhiqi Zhang, co-director of advising and operations, MDC FITW CCAT Math Grant. Next year, the grant expands to include MAT1033 for Health Science Majors, to be implemented collegewide. – AVG New Math Courses Improve Student Success With the redesign of developmental math courses, the Department of Mathematics at Miami Dade College has seen an increase in the number of students completing and passing course work and a decrease in the need to enroll in developmental math. 50% decrease of enrollment in developmental math 6% increase in pass rate for the redesigned MAT 1033 80% pass rate for redesigned MAT 0029 MGF 1106 now has the highest pass rate for a gateway mathematics course
