100 Percent Pass Rate Leads to New Courses The demand for jobs in information security is increasing in our growing digital landscape. Always on top of employment trends, Miami Dade College, in partnership with TechHire, launched the Security+ Boot Camp Certification Course. Funded by a TechHire grant, the 10-day course was taught by Diego Tibaquirá, MDC senior associate professor at the School of Engineering and Technology. He went above and beyond to ensure that students not only passed the rigorous industry CompTIA Security+ exam, but were ready to find jobs. “All the students who took the exam passed it,” said Tibaquirá, a 2017 Robert Russell Endowed Teaching Chair. “I also requested that TechHire do a resume writing and mock interview workshop as part of the boot camp because the idea was to help the students get jobs.” One of the students, Justin Burandt, was hired almost immediately after passing the exam. “It was one of the best days of my life,” Burandt said. “I finished my bachelor’s degree in business management and supervision at MDC, received my CompTIA Security+ certificate and found a great job all on the same day!” Burandt was hired by The Idea Center at MDC as a mentor for the Generation IT program, where he advises students on completing their own IT certifications. Another student, David Lozano got a job at TRAX, an airplane maintenance software company, as a help desk technician following certification. The success of the boot camp has paved the way for new credit courses at the College, including a College Credit Certificate in Digital Forensics and an Associate in Science in Computer Crime Investigations. “Technical schools charge thousands of dollars and aren’t invested in the outcome,” Tibaquirá said. “We’re providing students with workshops, tools and opportunities for jobs, which makes the MDC-TechHire parternship unique.” – BC
