Miami Dade College’s School of Business at Wolfson Campus and the Center for Financial Training (CFT) at MDC host a Future Bankers’ Camp every summer to provide a hands-on experience for high school students interested in careers in the financial services industry. The innovative program includes a two-week internship and industry certification. Additionally, CFT at MDC hosts ongoing financial literacy workshops. The workshops, which are free and open to the public, provide the information attendees need to make sound financial decisions. They are done in partnership with the School of Business and institutions that provide funding, instruction and materials. Past partners include Wells Fargo, TD Bank and Popular Community Bank. The majority of the workshops, Students Teaching Students, give students the instruction and materials they need to educate others in their own words about personal finance. In return, student instructors get a stipend and course credit. “We feel that having students hear from their peers makes it more relatable,” said Connie Laguna, president and CEO of the CFT at MDC. “They bring it close to home.”
