Miami Dade College artists and performers have a new space for self-expression. The Outdoor Studio opened at MDC, North Campus in October as part of the College’s Multidisciplinary Academic Learning Lounges (MALLs) initiative. The visual and performing arts lounge is an outdoor space with a recessed theater and raised stage platform that resembles a smaller-scale version of a classical Greek amphitheater. “We have a lot of students on campus who like to play guitar and sing, as well as artists who are not necessarily taking art courses, so this gives everyone the ability to display their talent on campus,” said MALLs director Evelyn Rodriguez. MDC’s first MALL, called The Hub, is a high-tech learning space that gives students a comfortable, bright environment for studying, networking and group projects. The Hub is also located at North Campus. “Since the concentration at The Hub is general education, it made sense for the next lounge to be an outside theater space,” Rodriguez said. Construction for a third academic lounge at the Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center is set to begin in 2018. – RS
