This fall, crowds flocked to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Miami premiere of the smash Broadway hit On Your Feet! The musical, which chronicles the rise of multiplatinum music moguls Gloria and Emilio Estefan from their humble beginnings in Miami, particularly hit home among the MDC community. Christie Prades, the talented young actress who plays Gloria Estefan on stage, is not only a Miami native but also an MDC Honors College alumna. “I feel a sense of pride and honor to be playing someone [like Gloria],” Prades told Ocean Drive magazine. “She succeeded in the dream that she felt was a possibility for her.” Prades shares even more in common with the Estefans besides talent and a fierce sense of determination. Before becoming a 19-time Grammy award winner, Emilio Estefan, too, got his start at Miami Dade College. “Everyone here has given their blood, sweat and tears,” Emilio Estefan told NBC. “This show is not just about Latinos; it is about dreams.” From MDC to The Great White Way Christie Prades and Emilio Estefan aren’t the only former MDC Sharks to make it to Broadway. MDC Hall of Fame alumnus and award-winning playwright Nilo Cruz frequently returns to MDC to inspire the next generation of great artists, while playwright and New World School of the Arts alumnus Tarell Alvin McCraney celebrated a 2016 Oscar win for Moonlight, the film adaptation of his play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue. – AVG
