According to the U.S. Department of Labor, a stackable credential is “part of a sequence of credentials that can be accumulated over time to build up an individual’s qualifications in order to move along a career pathway or up a career ladder to different and potentially higher-paying jobs.” The stackable credentials strategy at Miami Dade College is this: Create a series of ascending credentials that serve as a road map for talent development. At MDC, students can start at any credential level such as industry certificate, career technical certificate, college credit certificate, associate degree, or advanced technical certificate, all of which can lead to a baccalaureate degree. Stackable credentials allow adult learners to progress in their careers with a multitude of entry and exit points that result in credentials that have real value to employers.
