COSMOS Award Recognizes Connections Made Between Communities For the excellent work accomplished at MDC, the Coalition of South Florida Muslim Organizations (COSMOS) recently recognized Randall Kaufman as a Community Bridge Builder at their annual Community Appreciation Dinner. Kaufman, the interim faculty and student dean at Homestead Campus, received the award for creating the Islam Today series at MDC. A collaborative effort between the College and COSMOS, the forum gives the community a chance to learn more about Islam while also offering opportunities for the Muslim community to converse with MDC students and faculty about current issues. Speakers include Muslim students, professionals, religious leaders and scholars. “The students’ exposure to Islam is sometimes limited,” said Kaufman, “but I think what confirms the success of the series is that the questions they ask are deep, and sometimes personal. There is a genuine desire to learn more and understand.” So far, about 2,000 students have attended Islam Today forums. The series just concluded its second year, which also included events at InterAmerican Campus, thanks to the participation of professor Adrianne Thompson. Next year’s goal is to extend the series to all MDC campuses, reaching up to 10,000 students.
