MDC, Hialeah Campus hosted the Coalition of South Florida Muslim Organizations (COMSOS ) this spring for a comprehensive discussion on how current law enforcement policies impact immigrant populations. Kareem Shora, the section director for community engagement at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), led the town hall meeting. Shora joined the government in 2009 and serves on the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee. Veronica Venture, the DHS acting officer for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, also helped facilitate the discussion, which provided guidance on how federal policy changes could affect the status of H-1B and J-1 immigration visas. In addition to COSMOS, the event was sponsored by the ACLU of Florida, Emerge USA, Americans for Immigrant Justice, Florida International University, Miami Dade County Board of County Commissioners, MCCJ and the Asian American Advisory Board.
