Miami Dade College honored the contributions made by refugees to the United States with the celebration of World Refugee Day. The event was hosted by the Wolfson Campus in partnership with MDC’s Refugee/Entrant Vocational Educational Services Training Program (REVEST) and the Miami-Dade Refugee Task Force and Human Rights Committee. The program featured a panel discussion on issues affecting refugees led by Patti Grogan, the director of the Florida Department of Children and Families Office of Refugee Services and St. Thomas University Human Rights Institute Director Christine Reis, followed by a musical performance by former REVEST students. The United Nations’ World Refugee Day is an international event held annually in June. According to the U.N., a record number of people worldwide were displaced from their homes due to conflict or persecution in 2016, including 22.5 million refugees.
