Leaders from the Spanish-speaking world will gather at MDC on Oct. 24-25 to offer insights into the roles political parties play in the democratic regimes that govern their home countries. The event is organized by MDC through the Mezerhane Chair on Democracy, Rule of Law and Human Rights and the Democratic Institute of Spain and the Americas. Last year, the organizations teamed up to discuss the political and economic states in Venezuela and Nicaragua. Among the notable leaders in attendance were former Prime Minister of Spain José María Aznar, former Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla, former Colombian Presidents Andrés Pastrana and Álvaro Uribe, former Bolivian President Jorge Quiroga, former Uruguayan President Luis Alberto LaCalle, former Mexican President Vicente Fox, former Ecuadorian President Jorge Jamil Mahuad Witt and Luis Almagro, secretary general of the Organization of American States.
