Miami Dade College, Hialeah Campus was the recipient of a generous grant from the Florida Blue Foundation and the Florida Literacy Coalition to promote health literacy in the region, the fifth consecutive year the campus has received the award. The award will support MDC’s Health Literacy Project, which helps instructors supplement their English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses with subject matter on health and well-being. The innovation allows students to become informed about important health and medical issues while they learn English. In addition to enriching the ESOL curriculum with content that improves health literacy, the Hialeah Campus grant will fund presentations that students will give to the campus community. These presentations will help expand the spread of health literacy information and cement the spoken language skills of the students making the presentations.
