MDC Hosts Largest Maker Faire to Date Robots and science and games! Oh my! This spring, Miami Dade College, in partnership with MANO Americas and in association with Maker Media, hosted Maker Faire Miami at MDC Wolfson Campus in Downtown Miami. The event was a celebration of invention and ingenuity, featuring interactive exhibits that spanned the creative spectrum: technology, industrial arts, science, visual arts, music, crafts and more. Attendees of all ages had the opportunity to learn the secrets of 3-D modeling and multi-platform game development, thanks to MDC’s Miami Animation and Gaming International Complex (MAGIC). Meanwhile, MDC’s School of Entertainment and Design Technology demonstrated how to use forced perspective to create movie magic, produce music and podcasts, and create home photo studios and light sets. The Miami Fashion Institute invited fairgoers to bring old or discarded clothing items to transform into something new, while Miami Culinary Institute students shared culinary hacks such as “sous vide,” a technique that uses vacuum-sealed bags to infuse food with flavor. MDC art faculty from several campuses were also in attendance, demonstrating how to work with clay, jewelry metal forming, mixed media assemblage, wax casting relief printing and paper collage. Thanks to this year’s successful event, which included 150 exhibitors and thousands of attendees, Miami joins an elite band of select cities around the world to host large-scale Maker Faire events in 2017, including Rome, Paris, Tokyo, Atlanta, New York and Shenzhen.
