MDC Grad Excels With Presidential Scholarship MDC alumna Glen’Tisha Johnson won a Presidential Scholarhip at Tuskegee. Glen’Tisha Johnson, a 2014 recipient of the Tuskegee Distinguished Presidential Scholarship Award, was pretty clear about wanting a career in health care even before she entered college. “I had taken anatomy and physiology courses in high school, and was very interested in how the body works,” Johnson said. “I eventually chose nursing to be in more direct contact with patients.” Getting to that career goal required topping some big hurdles. Johnson worked the swing shift at a Target department store most weekday evenings as she pursued an associate degree at MDC, paying her own way through her first two years of college. Despite the full-time employment she pulled a 3.8 GPA in a demanding discipline, good enough to win the Presidential scholarship, which provided tuition, board and expenses at Tuskegee University, allowing Johnson to devote herself fully to her studies. But her challenges were not over yet, as the illness of her father often demanded her presence back in Miami during one trying semester. After her father recovered, the resilient Johnson got back on track, and she will graduate in the spring and take her nursing board examinations this summer. While at Tuskegee, Johnson has been impressed with the quality of the education she is receiving. “The academic culture here is excellent,” she says. “The instructors are passionate about their subject matter, and the hands-on training we do as part of our coursework has given me a lot of confidence.”
