MDC Hosts National Ashoka Conference Last month, MDC hosted the 2017 Ashoka U Exchange conference, which brought together hundreds of higher education innovators to discuss strategies and platforms to implement beneficial changes in society. Ashoka U is a consortium of colleges and universities dedicated to social entrepreneurship and a shared commitment to empowering changemakers on campuses and in the community. For its long History of innovation, MDC has been designated an Ashoka U Changemaker campus, making MDC the first in the Southeast to receive the prestigious distinction. At the three-day Exchange event, the agenda focused on developing individual skill sets to facilitate change, implementing innovations and advancing social innovation in higher education. The conference featured more than 100 workshops and panels in addition to site visits to locations in Miami where changemaking is well under way, including little Havana, the Little Haiti Cultural Complex and Verde Gardens, an organic farming network in Homestead. A workshop titled “Miami Dade College: Democratizing Social Innovation Education” explored the unique opportunities and challenges of a diverse, urban institution of higher education spread across eight campuses.
