Koubek Center Celebrates Miami’s Cultural Diversity This spring, MDC’s Koubek Center continued its popular bilingual family series, Playtime: Días de las Familias, with ¡Carnaval! – a celebration of Brazilian culture. The free event, held Feb. 25, included a Brazilian music and capoeira performance, a percussion workshop, a capoeira class and garden games, including soccer, craft-making and a mini parade. ¡Carnaval! Celebrated the culture of Brazil with lively music and dance performances. Miami Dade College designed the highly popular Playtime series to provide parents with an engaging way for children to familiarize themselves with other cultures of Latin America. The fun, interactive family events highlight diverse arts, crafts, literary histories and music, as well as the dance from countries in Latin America. Children are invited to sing, dance and create together. The series launched with a festive interpretation of the Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration at Halloween time, then continued with Las Aventuras del Don Quixote (the adventures of Don Quixote), Fiesta Navideña (a Christmas party), a celebration of Peruvian tradition and children’s games from Puerto Rico. The Koubek Center – su casa de cultura (your home to culture) – is an intellectual, cultural and community hub in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood. A historic landmark in South Florida, the revitalized Koubek mansion remains true to its pioneering heritage, celebrating its multicultural community with workshops, art exhibitions, theater performances, literary readings, concerts and more. In addition to the mansion, the iconic space includes glorious gardens, the Koubek theater, the ArtSpace gallery, classrooms and mini performance spaces.
