Her opening remarks, titled “Food Politics: From Personal Responsibility to Social Responsibility” set the tone for a day of networking, learning and exploring new trends affecting food policy, innovation, and community engagement. Following Nestle’s address, policy and communications consultant Sara Soka presented a talk titled “The Sugar Wars: How the Battle Against Public Health Enemy No. 1 is Being Waged.” Working in Berkeley, California, in 2014, Soka managed the first successful soda tax campaign ever passed in the United States. Additional topics included the potential impact in the U.S. of Chile’s adoption of a new food labeling warning against dangerous ingredients, as well as a discussion of how to build better food brands in the digital age. Dr. Marion Nestle offered the keynote address at MDC’s first annual Better Food Movement Conference. Serving as the launch of Food Week 2017 in Miami, this inaugural conference was sponsored by MDC and MCI together with Natcom Global, a premium video content company and its healthy food media brand Knowmore.
