The University of Ottawa faced many challenges when they envisioned the new Alex Trebek Alumni Hall inaugurated last spring. This project is truly unique within the campus strategic plan and builds a vision for present and future alumni. Despite being critical to the strategic mission of the University of Ottawa, the college’s Alumni Relations Office had previously been housed in leased or other non-permanent spaces. That was before the University adopted the fundraising campaign, “Defy the Conventional,” and began to develop a master plan to defy all obstacles and have the office relocate to a permanent residence within the University of Ottawa proper.

One of the critical priorities would be the multimedia aspects of the Alumni Hall. As the university “Defy the Conventional” brand dictated, the technology plan would need to be bold in terms of functionality and befitting of a showcase facility for their critical alumni constituents. However, it would also need to be achievable within budget and timeline constraints.

The university turned to an AMX Enova DVX -3155HD all-in-one switcher as the core AV platform due to its ability to meet the current technical requirements as well as its innate flexibility for future needs. AMX’s Resource Management Suite (RMS) software provides visibility and control of the AV equipment throughout the building, ensuring any potential equipment failures are either prevented or quickly addressed.

For audio needs, an alternate HARMAN Professional line was the winning choice. Six JBL CBT-50LA-1 line array speakers, each controlled by a speaker transformer, allow for preset output levels depending on the nature of the event.

The success of this project goes beyond the opening of a new building with state-of-the-art technology. The facility embodies the University of Ottawa’s ideals and overall philosophy, which is imperative for attracting faculty, students, and research funds now and in the future.
