The Official Publication of the Pelican Bay Foundation, Inc. September 2012 • Volume 13, No. 14 PELICAN BAY FOUNDATION BOARD MEMBERS Chair 2012-2013 South Berm & South Beach Facilities Temporary Closure September–October By Jim Hoppensteadt, Foundation President Ronnie Bellone Vice-Chair/Treasurer Robert Uek Secretary Noreen Murray Directors Bill Carpenter Mary McLean Johnson Jerry Moffatt Robert Pendergrass Starting September 1, 2012 and continuing through October 31, 2012, the Pelican Bay Services Division will perform maintenance and extensive restoration work to the berm south of The Com-mons to the Waldorf-Astoria (formerly Naples Grande) gate. To ensure safety dur-ing this extensive excavation and reconstruction, the south berm and south beach facili-ties will be closed during this 60-day period of construc-tion. This closure will include the tram station at The Com-mons due to the amount and nature of the construction traffic. Restaurant and beach services, including sailing and kayaks, will be directed to the North Beach and Sandpiper Restaurant. Beach fitness classes resume in October and will be moved to the North Beach. Class times remain the same. Tram operations will continue from the Sandpiper parking lot, and the North Tram Sta-tion. Tennis activities and access to The Commons office will continue as normal. The berm acts as the perim-eter containment structure that allows stormwater to be stored within the reten-tion areas on the east side of the berm as well as a dam to retard storm surge from the west. Over time, erosion has occurred along the west-ern side of the berm. This continued erosion will even-tually undermine the integ-rity of the berm and pathway. The proposed remedy is to restore and stabilize the per-mitted 4:1 side slopes of the berm. Additionally, place-ment of rip-rap at the base of the restored toe of slope will provide a more stable structure to minimize future erosion issues. The berm was designed to serve as a recreational area as well as a part of the surface water management system.
