A nationwide launch at Walmart and select grocery chains is scheduled to take place in February. The turkey bacon for dogs joins oth-er Freshpet products, such as Wag-gurt frozen yogurt for dogs, already on shelves at Kroger and other stores. The U.S.-made turkey bacon comes 14 slices to a package. Tops to Acquire New York, Vermont Supermarkets Tops Friendly Markets, headquar-tered in Williamsville, N.Y., announced a deal with New York-based Grand Union Markets, an affiliate of C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc. of Keene, N.H., for the acquisi-tion of 18 upstate New York super-markets and three in Vermont. The move expands Tops’ store lineup to 153, extends the chain’s reach into Vermont and adds to its already strong presence in New York. “We are very excited about this growth opportunity for Tops, especially since these stores are a natural extension of our current footprint,” said Frank Curci, Tops president and CEO. Tops plans to retain all 600 employees in the soon-to-be-acquired stores. Twenty stores are expected to keep their Grand Union banner and one will con-tinue to operate under the Bryant’s name. Vons Stores End Double Couponing As of Aug. 1, all 278 Safeway-owned Southern California and Nevada Vons/Pavilions grocery stores ended their dou-ble-coupon program. “The practice of double-couponing has become a mar-keting tool of the past,” said Vons spokesman Carlos Illingworth. The cessation of the pro-gram affects all product cate-gories, including pet supplies and foods. The new stores represent opportunities for distributors of outdoor pet gear to secure shelf space. The Saginaw store will be a 43,000-square-foot Cabela’s Out-post with a core-flex floor plan that allows products to be rotated to match the season. Ground-breaking is scheduled for the fall, and the store is expected to open in spring 2013. Alaska’s first Cabela’s will sport the log-and-stone exterior the chain is known for. The store will contain more than 100,000 square feet of floor space and fea-ture a 5,575-gallon freshwater aquarium. Construction is set to begin in the spring 2013. Zellers on Road to Extinction Zellers, an 81-year-old chain of Canadian discount department stores, is closing the 64 loca-tions that were not part of a takeover by Minneapolis-based Target Corp. Zellers’ parent company, Circle No. 275 on Reader Service Card Toronto-based Hudson’s Bay Co., announced that the closures will take place by March 2013. Target assumed the leases on 189 Zellers stores and plans to convert 125 to 135 of them, according to The Globe and Mail .
